The Interstate Oratorical Association held their 142nd national competition April 23-24.  Each year the top two competitors from the TN state tournament have a chance to compete at this prestigious tournament.  This year TN had a student represented in the final round of competition, placing 6th overall.

Escarlet Escobar, a senior at Belmont University, presented a persuasive speech on the controversial topic of marital rape.  While this practice is illegal in all 50 states, many states have laws making the prosecution of the practice nearly impossible.  Belmont speech and debate coach Jason Stahl explained that, “Escarlet’s speech is an important issue that so few people know about.  Her eloquent message along with her passionate presentation not only made her a national finalist, but also shared an important message across the country.”
